What You Will Do
Structural test of our products is central to the validation process of jet engines to ensure the structural integrity as well the protection of our test assets and safety of the people testing them. Jet engines classically have forced response and instability induced stress within the operating range of the engine that must be monitored and avoided during early testing. As such, the Structural Test Fellow is required throughout the process to integrate with our structural design engineers to understand the machines constraints while extracting the needed test data to first understand and then ultimately deliver a robust product to our customers. The ideal Structural Test Fellow would be someone with deep structural dynamics understanding with a background in ground and flight testing on a multitude of engine types. This Fellow would be highly respected within the structural community with the ability to integrate well with the part designers (Mod Centers) and systems organizations (ED&L) to understand their data needs and thereby instrumentation requirements for each stress engine spread across many test types (stress, operability, bird ingestion, FBO as examples). They would have a strong desire to train and mentor our next generation structures engineers and be a demonstrated industry expert in structural test with excellent communication skills, humility and the ability to team with Pratt Whitney engineers and leadership to drive adherence to process and test safety while striving for productivity improvements within the test and validation process. The Structural Test Fellow will support the PW Advanced Measurement group ensuring the proper application of measurement systems (AIM, FRS and traditional inst.) to drive towards using new test techniques and measurement systems to streamline our data collection and processing needs. This Fellow will work with the PFDL, validation planning, data recording, sensor applications, instrumentation, real time systems software, DO Design Sub-Disciplines and Advanced Measurements group to ensure our risk-based EDPs contain the necessary structural key-learning for engine certification. In addition, this person must coach our engineers on how our products will be used by our customer and what attributes of our product are most important to our customers to ensure that our products are safe and structurally robust for their intended use. The strategic focus of the Structural Fellow should include but not limited to; certification requirements, industry contacts, enterprise level engagement, structural test planning and test execution concepts. Tactically, the Structures Test Fellow will also serve as structures discipline chief for successful instrumentation and special test equipment designs within Development Operations. The ultimate measure of success for the Structural Test Fellow would be that our product successfully performs its intended mission in the flight environment and has demonstrated adequate structural safety margin this prior to reaching our airframe customer for flight testing. Based on business needs, the incumbent may be required to support other duties/functions within the company and have availability to travel up to 25
