Responsibilities

  • The Employee shall provide support to NSWC PC for the Machine Shop.
  • The employee will provide direct support in performing machine shop operations such as sawing, turning, milling, grinding, and heat treatment of metallic and non-metallic materials.
  • Manually operated and CNC machines made accessible for the job tasking requirements include but are not limited to:
    • lathes, milling machines, cutting saws, tool and cutter grinders, surface grinders, drill presses, heat treatment ovens, layout and measuring tools along with general hand operated equipment associated with the machinist trade.
  • Support in this area will include numerous tasks which are dissimilar in nature but have in common machining and assembly of metallic and non-metallic materials / components to make completed assemblies per blueprints in accordance with assigned print tolerances.
  • This task includes direct support in performing Machining support, such as but not limited to; production of replacement parts and new parts in making repairs of metal parts of mechanical equipment. Work involves most of the following.
    • Interpreting written instructions and specifications, planning and laying out of work, using a variety of machinists hand tools and precision measuring instruments, setting up and operating standard machine tools.
  • This incumbent is responsible for the shaping of metal parts to close tolerances, making standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds of machining; knowledge of the working properties of the common metals, selecting standard materials, parts, and equipment required for this work; and fitting and assembling parts into mechanical equipment.
  • In general, the machinists work normally requires a rounded training in machine-shop practice, usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
  • The Employee will be responsible for gathering required materials, blueprint reading, laying out parts to include figuring feeds and speeds rates, ability to use precision measuring devices, and determining what equipment is necessary to complete the task.
  • The Employee shall be required to comply with Shop policy concerning regular work area cleanliness and weekly cleanups.
  • The employee shall perform machine shop operations such as sawing, turning, milling, grinding, and heat treatment of metallic and non-metallic materials.
  • The employee shall: Manufacture parts from castings, forgings, and other raw stocks made of various metals, metal alloys, and other materials to specifications of drawings per the customers work order. This may include compliance with military specifications or military standards cited within the drawings or specifications.
  • Operate various types of conventional and CNC machine tools and their attachments to perform machining operations.
  • Provide training in Mastercam or available programming software as required to demonstrate proficiency.
  • Interpret drawings and other types of specifications such as sketches or models of parts in order to fabricate a product.
  • Apply knowledge of machining processes in performing machining operations such as boring, drilling, planning, milling, and turning on milling machines, radial, or multiple spindle drill presses, shapers, planers, lathes, engravers, or equivalent types of conventional or CNC machine tools.
  • Plan necessary work sequences, laying out reference points and lines to be followed in the machining processes, plan for and set up the work in the machine.
  • Program the cutter path using Mastercam or available programming software, figure feeds and speeds rates, select and shape metal cutting tools and inserts.
  • Perform precision handwork to fit, finish, and assemble machined parts and equipment. Use precision measuring devices and determine what equipment is necessary to complete the task.
  • Provide recommendations for modernized technologies or when machining issues arise. (CDRL A023)
  • Interface and communicate with the customers as needed to confer regarding drawings, machining services, and technical instructions to complete the work order.
  • The employee produces replacement parts and new parts in making repairs of metal parts of mechanical equipment.
  • Work involves most of the following: interpreting written instructions and specifications,planning and laying out of work, using a variety of machinists hand tools and precision measuring instruments, setting up and operating standard machine tools.
  • The employee is responsible for the shaping of metal parts to close tolerances, making standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds of machining; knowledge of the working properties of the common metals, selecting standard materials, parts, and equipment required for this work; and fitting and assembling parts into mechanical equipment.
  • In general, the machinists work normally requires a rounded training in machine-shop practice, usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
  • The Machinist, Maintenance IV constructs and repairs jigs, fixtures, cutting tools, gauges, or metal dies or molds used in shaping or forming metal or nonmetallic material (e.g., plastic, plaster, rubber, glass).
  • Work typically involves: planning and laying out work according to models, blueprints, drawings, or other written or oral specifications, understanding the working properties of common metals and alloys, selecting appropriate materials, tools, and processes required to complete task, making necessary shop computations, and setting up and operating various machine tools and related equipment.
  • Work for someone in this position also involves using various Tool and Die Makers hand tools and precision measuring instrument, working to very close tolerances, heat-treating metal parts and finished tools and dies to achieve required qualities, and fitting and assembling parts to prescribed tolerances and allowances.
  • In general, the Machinists work requires rounded training in machine shop and tool room practice usually acquired through formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
  • The employee - Provides daily work direction, technical troubleshooting and diagnostic analysis, safety and technical training to assigned Machinist crews; ensures availability of parts and materials; performs Machinist duties as time permits.
  • Works closely with planner and scheduler to review red/green reports, scheduling future work, discussing emergency calls, etc.
  • Coordinates with other leads, trades, and occasionally with contractors on site. The employee classification has work direction responsibility for an assigned crew plus performs some of the same tasks completed by the journey level classification.
  • Provides daily work direction and coordinates the activities of assigned crews with the Operations staff and with other trades/crafts.
  • Provides higher-level troubleshooting and diagnostic analysis to identify root causes of failure to identify appropriate reliability-centered maintenance activities for improved equipment reliability. Provides technical and safety training to assigned crew.
  • Ensures that all work performed by assigned crew is performed safely and meets the requirements of the requesting department.
  • Assist with acquiring parts and materials needed to complete assignments and ensures the work performed is in compliance with standards, codes and regulatory requirements, and meets established deadlines.
  • As time permits, performs the following Machinist duties: Performs complete installation of mechanical equipment including setting, grouting, connecting, aligning, and testing per the manufacturers specifications.
  • Performs precision alignment and balancing of rotating equipment (pumps, fans, compressors, blowers, etc).
  • Fabricates parts and assemblies for installation, including welding of component parts and additional machine tool technologies.
  • Performs precision machining, including turning, grinding, milling, etc., using standard machine shop equipment.
  • Identifies and implements design modifications to mechanical equipment to improve performance, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Performs equipment rigging, lifting, and setting. Operates equipment including fork lifts, aerial platform lifts, hoists, cranes, etc.
  • In general, the employees work requires rounded training in machine shop and tool room practice usually acquired through formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
  • The employee is Highly experienced and skilled, often with decades of experience.
  • Recognized as an expert in the field, with deep knowledge of advanced machining techniques.
  • May be involved in R&D, tool design, or process improvement initiatives.
  • Often plays a key role in training and developing new machinists.
  • The Employee shall receive written work assignments from the Production Control Manager or his designated representative. The Employee shall be responsible for receiving and reviewing blueprints and materials for possible discrepancies, error or omissions that will be necessary to complete assembly.
  • The Employee will be familiar with shop related math, knowledge of metals, blueprint reading and geometric dimensioning and tolerance Standards as deemed necessary by the Branch Head, Code E, or designated representative.

Qualifications

  • Must be measurable; must be objective, non-comparative and relevant to performance; must be about ability and not willingness
  • CNC operation and setup are required.
  • Experience operating and programming OMAX or similar water jet machines is highly desired.
  • Utilize feature Cam CAD/CAM software to generate machine instructions in symbolic language to direct numerical control machines to regulate movement of machine along cutting path.
  • Basic conventional machinist knowledge and experience is essential for this position.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Security Clearance and Complete a background investigation.
  • High school diploma.
  • Utilize Lathes: Clausing, Colchester, Monarch, Sydney
  • Utilize Mills: Bridgeport series I and II, Bridgeport Easytrack
  • Utilize HAAS VF 8 5-Axis vertical machining center.
  • Utilize Milltronics Centurion 7 control

Desired Qualifications:

  • Nice to have skills or experience but does not disqualify a candidate
  • Programming utilizing Mastercam.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • Some lifting up to 75 pounds required.
  • Eye, hearing, and foot protection will be required.
  • Constant visual awareness is necessary due to moving parts.
